Buyers Guide to Choosing Small Portable Greenhouses

Small portable greenhouses come in several forms. This can, by some definitions, include cold frames. A small greenhouse might be a growing rack, or single set of protected shelves. A small greenhouse could be a portable tent unit, or even a shed sized building. One type of small greenhouse is the “mini” which is like a cold frame and designed to fit over a raised bed.
The main difference between this and a cold frame is the type of roof they have. The cold frame typically is flat, while a mini greenhouse has a pitched roof. Another difference is that a mini can be used over a planter on a balcony or similar where there just is not much space.
Another option is a small greenhouse kit for portable greenhouses. These range from tent style with clear plastic or even lightweight opaque film for defused light to lightweight plastic panels. Some connect to the wall or window area of a house, while others are stand alone models.

One beneficial side impact of these is that they provide sheltered areas to sprout seedings but can be moved from location to location as needed. They are inexpensive also, making them perfect for the beginner. Since they are not costly, once you get the hang of greenhouse gardening you can always move up to a larger size, providing you have space for it.

When looking for a small greenhouse, take into consideration the size you do have to work with. If you are limited to a balcony or patio consider a grow rack or a mini style. If you have a little more space a Lean-to in the smaller ranges can be wonderful for growing plants. Some medium to small size of this style are actually walk in greenhouses, but since they attach to the house wall, they don't need to be that wide.

Another option is the tent style small greenhouse. These can be placed right over the garden if you want to work the soil. Or they can be set up on a patio with shelves inside them. Many of these are extremely light and durable rated to hold a couple hundred pounds of hanging plants. Additionally, you can leave the tent style up in the winter with some protection from a hedge or windbreak as many are rated to withstand snow and wind.

Selection of the right small greenhouse depends on what you want to do. Ask yourself first what type of plants you want to grow. Then look at the space constraints you have. Consider the climate you live in. Snowy areas need different types of greenhouses then those with excessive heat.

You will also want to know your budget, not just for building the greenhouse but for maintenance of it. Once you know these factors you can shop and compare for the best value and performance in small greenhouses for your area. Regardless of what you need you are bound to find many kits on the market to choose from.
