Decorating At Christmas
Indoors the two rooms which are traditionally decorated are the living and dining rooms. The living room is the most popular location of the Christmas tree and is where some people put the majority of their Christmas decoration. The tree is iconic of Christmas and it is lovely to decorate it with family, layering first the lights then the strings of tinsel and beads followed by the coloured baubles and topped off with either an angel or a star. Also in the living room the mantelpiece is sometimes decorated with garlands and greenery, scented candles and perhaps a nativity set. It is also traditional to hang stockings from the mantle. Christmas is the time where the tree lights are on for long hours in the day and the room is best lit with side lamps and ideally a roaring fire. The Dining room is where Christmas lunch takes place and should be decorated to look as festive as the turkey. For a special meal, it is important to make the table look smart by using a clean tablecloth, napkins, place mats and creating a decorative centrepiece. To begin laying the table, put out a cleanly ironed cloth and put the centrepiece in the middle, surround that with four placemats for the serving dishes. Continue putting enough placemats onto the table for the number of people eating. Lay out the cutlery, crackers and a wine and water glass by each and arrange the napkin in a ring or inside the water glass. Make sure there are salt and pepper shakers on the table and a jug of water. It is nice to have Christmas music playing as you eat.
Outdoors, it is traditional to hang a wreath on the front door but this is only really done now by those living on a quiet street or those with a front garden. Wreaths are usually a circle of greenery decorated with ribbon and pine cones but there are other options such as wreaths of dried fruit or fabric ones. Outdoor fairy lights are becoming increasingly popular for those choosing to decorate simply their front gardens and trees. A more vibrant display is favoured by some who decorate their whole roofs and home exteriors with lights and put models of Santa Claus and his reindeers on the house. Some streets hold competitions for the best decorated house and others do it because they love to celebrate Christmas!
